The foremost contribution of India to the world over the ages has been considered to be in the field of spirituality. India has been the birthplace of many divine incarnations and the history of India has been enriched by the gracious presence of innumerable spiritual giants and great devotees and jnanis of yore. The various places associated with the divine presence of these incarnations and god men, and various locations associated with the stories from Hindu epics have all become places of worship for the Hindu devotees.  With its great temples and shrines, each having its own local legend behind it;  with many spiritual centers and maths established by many god-men such as Buddha and Sankara, we can say for certain that the land of Bharat Varsha can be said as the capital of spiritual tourism on this globe. Because of this rich diversity and the presence so many holy places, pilgrimage can be said as the preferred form of tourism for most Indians.
